When East Bladen High School journalism students were tasked with writing about something that makes East Bladen special, EBHS journalist Debo Lewis chose to sit down with East Bladen alumnus and Head Soccer Coach, Jay Raynor, to learn more about the heart behind the soccer program and the school he proudly calls home.
East Bladen soccer is more than wins and losses. It is about culture, community, and preparing students for life. Here is what Coach Raynor shared about what makes this program and East Bladen so special:
Coaching Philosophy
Each season, Coach Raynor builds his system around the players, their strengths, personalities, and abilities. He believes in an attacking mindset where everyone attacks and everyone defends. When players believe they can score and play freely, effort and energy naturally follow.
Team Culture and Relationships
A positive culture starts with respect and trust. Coach Raynor believes in a player-led team, where athletes have a voice and take ownership. High school sports are about developing people through competition and teaching lessons that last far beyond the field.
Community Matters
From volunteering at White Lake triathlons to working with the Optimist Club and hosting camps, East Bladen soccer is committed to giving back. The goal is simple, leave it better than we found it.
Handling Challenges
Every player is different, and every situation requires understanding. Coach Raynor emphasizes relationships first, knowing what players may be facing off the field and addressing issues early before they grow. Respect, communication, and strong leadership are key.
Accountability and Expectations
When players struggle, the focus is on the person first, player second. Coach Raynor believes love, care, and respect motivate far more than punishment. The lessons learned, discipline, selflessness, and teamwork, apply to sports and life.
Preparation and Growth
Preparation happens all season long. While film and scouting matter, Coach Raynor believes most in being the best version of East Bladen. His focus is doing what we do and doing it well.
East Bladen Pride
As an alumnus and member of the first soccer team at EB, coaching here is deeply personal. Coach Raynor describes standing on the field after games, taking it all in, and feeling immense pride. Through hard work, great students, a supportive community, and faith, dreams are being made.
East Bladen is not just a school; it is a family.
And our soccer program reflects that every day.

While we may be on winter break, we are still proud to show off the outstanding work our students have accomplished.
Mrs. Beard’s class showcased the knowledge they gained in Civics by creating cereal box projects on the three branches of government. Students combined their understanding with creativity, designing unique projects that each included an interactive game for others to enjoy.
